||CMS MEMBERS’ WALK
Cairn(s) Gwilym – two for the effort of one
Leader: Peter Foulkes
Distance / Climb / Ground: 8.4km (5.2 miles), 200m (660feet), off track for about a third of the route.
Start time: 10.30 am. Please meet at 10.15.
Start location: Maesnant (at the end of the tarmac on the Pumlumon “back road”) – SN775879. Parking can be found in several lay-bys en route
This walk, as most of Peter’s walks do, starts at Maesnant before going into Hengwm and picking up the southwest ridge of Mynydd Hyddgen. The ridge slowly twists and turns, climbing up to the two cairns which grace the top of the hill (566m). The two cairns can be spotted from miles around but their stature possibly owes more to the Victorian Age than Bronze, the ‘date’ of the foundations on which the cairns sit. Was it from this lofty perch that Owain Glyndwr and his men rained down on the English/Flemish army in 1401? Our return to Maesnant is via the Hyddgen valley in which it is believed the battle/skirmish took place. On the opposite side of the river we may spot, tussock grass permitting, Cerrig Cyfammod Glyndwr (Glyndwr’s Covenant Stones), thought by some to mark the site of the battle.
This walk is in sheep country, if you would like to bring your dog please could you ring Peter (on 01650 511821) beforehand.
- PARTICIPATION: Participants in these walks must be CMS members for insurance reasons.
