A Gallows/Viewpoint Walk

Leader: Peter Foulkes
Meet time: 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.
Start Place: “Hard shoulder” just below The Star Inn, Dylife on the Machynlleth to Staylittle mountain road
Grid Ref. SN 862940
Distance: approx 8km. (5miles) Climb: 250m/+820 feet)

A short(ish) walk that takes in; a Roman Fort, a Gallows mound, Wheel pits, a trig. point and Wynford Vaughan Thomas’ “spell binding” view of the mountains to the north (cloud permitting!). Mostly on tracks/paths but with rough ground up to, and down from, the trig point

Car arrangements: the walk will finish at the Wynford Vaughan Thomas Memorial west of Dylife where Peter will park a car before the walk starts to “shuttle” walkers back to the start place.

Maps: OS Explorer (1:25000) sheet 215 Newtown & Machynlleth or OS Landranger (1:50000) sheet 135 Aberystwyth & Machynlleth.

CMS WALKS

  • PARTICIPATION: Participants in these walks must be CMS members for insurance reasons. If you aren’t a member and would like to participate in a CMS walk, please visit the membership page, where you can join on-line, or print a membership form to bring along on the day, with your subscription payment, and give to a Society official.
  • WEATHER: will influence the nature of the walks and may necessitate changes. Please check with leaders beforehand if you have any queries. Suitable walking gear is essential. Bring a packed lunch and drink.
  • DOGS:  Because of livestock, dogs are not permitted on some walks – please contact leader in advance.  When dogs are permitted they should be kept on a lead unless the walk leader agrees otherwise.
